My friend, Hang and I met at the main Post Office in the Old Quarter and then drove the traffic free and quiet streets to the Long Bien Market. This market is one of the biggest and busiest in Ha Noi. It is called this because it sits under the Long Bien Bridge which has quite a storied history from the war. Long Bien is a cantilever bridge built in 1903 and was heavily bombarded during the American War due to its critical position – the only bridge at that time crossing the Hong (Red) River that connected Ha Noi to the main port, Hai Phong.
I read somewhere that like everything else in Ha Noi, this market is not only busy and chaotic, but also on steroids. If that was true I wanted to experience it, and whoa, I had no idea what I was getting into.
When I drove into the market area, it was obvious I was way out of my league for busy and chaotic experiences.

Even with that said I found myself caught up in the energy and buzz of this place. This was Ha Noi in its most throbbing state. I immediately looked for a place to park as I was quickly being overrun by people on foot and motorbikes. Long Bien Market is a wholesale market and distribution point for probably most of Ha Noi.
Farmers from all around the city head to this area on the Old Quarter side of the bridge carrying their produce on motorbikes and trucks. Some sell to middlemen while others set up their own stalls on the roads surrounding the market.

Men and women alike were loading up their motorbikes while heavy trucks dropped off mountains of produce. The only way to move is to either be aggressive and squeeze through narrow passageways and try to blend in with the traffic or be very agile and step in and out of small openings. I attempted a little of both and came out without getting squashed, yelled at or falling on anyone.
I was fortunate to get off a few good photos just by being aware of my surroundings and what kind of commotion was nearby.

The market is also a popular meeting place for women from the outskirts of Ha Noi, who work as porters in an effort to feed their families. And work is just what they do, carrying heavy baskets balanced on either end of bamboo poles.
The tiny women are deceptively strong and move quickly through the clogged veins of the market place, negotiating their heavy baskets adeptly without stopping for man nor motorbike.
This market is packed to the gunnels with shoppers, motorbikes, trucks, market sellers, containers of every kind of produce, mounds of tied flowers, piles of herbs and spices, cut and quartered animal parts and small piles of plant parts.
A visit to Long Bien Market is probably not on any travel publications’ list of things to do in Ha Noi, but a visit to this chaotic and bustling market is a must in my opinion, but to do so you’ve got to get up while the sun is still sleeping.

The Hoan Kiem Lake area at the center of Hanoi is the “no-vendor zone,” but there are still many passers-by vendors. The existence of the vendors lends a hand to the pickpockets to “perform their actions.”
The pickpockets may disguise themselves as the vendors, trying to persuade unwitting tourists to buy some souvenirs and rip them off.
Thai TTR Weekly recently published an article titled “Stealth of hand in Old Hanoi” saying that foreign travelers had their assets stolen by the vendors.
Some months ago, the story about a Scottish woman who lost her passport published on local newspapers raised a wave of anger among Hanoians.

The woman cried and shouted in English that she needed a help because she lost the passport, promising to reward the people who give back her passport or the people who can show her how to get it back.
The Scottish traveler said she knew a group of women stole the passport, but she could not talk to them because she could not speak Vietnamese. The people, who stood around the woman, did not give support or advices.
Koji Tanabe, a Japanese national, was so astonished when a Vietnamese man rushed into him and embraced him. And while the Japanese young man still felt astonished, the Vietnamese man had enough time to steal a mobile phone worth VND4 million.
Chin Umi and her friend, Jo Yuong mi from South Korea, were going to buy tickets to a water puppetry show when a Vietnamese man rifled their bag, running away with an iPhone 4S. Luckily enough, the local police caught the pickpocket and returned the mobile phone to the travelers.

In the ancient capital city of Hue, the local police reportedly have caught a gang of men who lived on stealing foreign tourists’ assets.
A French traveler reported to the local police that he had euro600, or VND18 million, picked when he was walking on Chu Van An Street in Hue City. After paying money for some postcards that some vendors offered, the traveler discovered that his money was stolen.
With the same trick, the same men successfully picked $91 from a foreign traveler on Pham Ngu Lao Street some weeks before.
A report of the HCM City Police showed that in 2011 alone, 56 robbery cases took place, 61 percent of which occurred in district 1, the area where there were most travelers. This did not include the unsuccessful robbery cases and unreported cases.

Ironically, pickpockets turned up even in the places which were protected by security guards. At the Hue Festival 2012, the Argentina Ambassador had his mobile phone picked. The pickpocket stood between the ambassador and his wife with one hand pretending to take pictures and the other hands picking the phone.
Luckily, the behavior of stealing mobile phone was discovered by the Venezuelan ambassador who was trying to take pictures of the festivals. The pickpocket was later sentenced to 2-year jail for the behavior of stealing others’ assets.
Vietnamese, who have been well known as hospitable and friendly, feel a worry that the pickpockets would spoil the image of Vietnam as a friendly destination. Competent agencies have ordered the police and district authorities to do everything they can to crack down on street vendors who rip off foreign tourists.

The director of another travel firm also noted that local businesses were losing an opportunity to sell local specialties to cruise tourists, simply because they did not understand the travellers well.
In many cases, local products remain unsalable because of “very odd reasons”, he said. Honey in the Mekong River Delta, Go Den liquor in Long An, or My Tho royal jelly are all high-quality products, but they cannot sell well because they are not packed well, he added.

<li>Vietnamese overseas residing in the US and do not have Vietnam passport</li>
<li>Americans who is spouse or children of a Vietnam passport-holder or overseas Vietnamese</li>
</ul>
<h3>Duration:</h3>
The maximum period of exemption is 5 years and must be 6 month shorter than the validity of the current valid passport. During the exemption period, the person can travel in and out of the country without a tourist visa.
<h3>How to Apply:</h3>
You can apply to Embassy/ Consulate directly by mail or in person. If you apply for Vietnam visa by mail, please submit along with your application a pre-paid postal envelop with tracking information such as USPS priority or Fedex. After preparing relevant documents, you can send all to:

<li>2 passport sized photos 2×2 inches or 4×6 cm</li>
<li>Proof of identity that you are an overseas Vietnamese: the original version and a photocopy version. They can be permitted to come back to Vietnam, or Certification of Vietnamese nationality, or Certification that you lost Vietnamese nationalities, or Birth Certificate, or expired Vietnam passport, or Vietnam ID card.</li>
<li>You can replace with a letter of Guarantee from Vietnamese association abroad, or from a Vietnam relative in case you cannot provide any of the above mentioned proof of Vietnamese identity, consist of proof of Vietnamese identity of those who issue the letter.</li>
</ul>

<li>2 passport sized photos of 4×6 cm or 2×2 inches</li>
<li>Foreign passport: an original and a photocopy</li>
<li>Proof of ties to Vietnam (an original copy and a photocopy version): birth certificate, marriage certificate, certification of family relationship, decision about adopting a Vietnamese child</li>
